Dunbar, East Lothian

Dunbar is best known as the birthplace of John Muir, the explorer who founded Yellowstone National Park in the US and became known as the father of the Conservation movement. John Muir House, 128 High Street, was his childhood home, and contains a small museum.

On the rocks of the harbour stand the remains of Dunbar Castle. This Castle once sheltered Mary Queen of Scots as she fled from Edinburgh.

East Lothian is a county which many class as excellent Golfing Country, with many excellent courses along the coastline from Mussleburgh, near Edinburgh to North Berwick and Dunbar. Bass Rock, East Lothian

There are also many miles of sandy beaches along the coastline that are home to huge colonies of seabirds, especially on the Bass Rock, a volcanic islet off North Berwick.
